Department of Chinese Literature

The Department of Chinese Literature was founded in 1980. The M.A. program was established in 1990, followed by the Ph.D. program in 1993, creating a comprehensive academic system from undergraduate to Ph.D.

Educational Objectives
 

• Cultivate Humanistic Literacy:Immersed in an atmosphere rich in history, literature, thought, and language, students are encouraged to develop a profound sense of humanistic concern, deep self-reflection, firm moral courage, and sound judgment.
• Foster Macro-Thinking:Integrating literature, history, and philosophy is a fine tradition for Chinese scholars. The department inherits this academic style, aiming to equip students with multifaceted, comprehensive thinking and the capacity to grasp current trends and see the big picture.
• Develop Holistic Education:"Learning is like sailing against the current; if one does not advance, one regresses." The department aims to help students develop the psychological qualities to refine themselves, respect others, and care for the environment, upheld throughout their lives.
• Foster a Global Perspective Based in Taiwan:The department advocates remembering roots while students actively expand international horizons, participating in international affairs to make meaningful contributions.
• Strengthen Professional Competencies:The department aims to foster excellent professional abilities. In addition to practical skills in academic research and language application, it includes the ability to lead by example and create a harmonious society.

Through these five objectives, the department guides students to become high-quality university students in both knowledge and life. We hope students nurture the inner qualities of a modern global citizen with a sense of history, responsibility, and a worldview.

        2.Enhance Abilities in Specialized Fields:Foster and enhance basic abilities to appreciate, write, think, and interpret literature and culture, academic thought, and language:

           A.Literature and Culture:Cultivate and refine basic abilities to appreciate, write, and apply Chinese literature and culture.
           B.Academic Thought:Cultivate and refine basic abilities to study, discuss, and think about classic works of Chinese academic thought.
           C.Language:Cultivate and refine basic abilities to interpret and discuss Chinese Linguistics and Philology.

• M.A. Program

            C.Language: Foster intermediate abilities to study, interpret, and discuss Chinese Linguistics and Paleography. Selection of this field requires preparation for advanced academic study.

• Ph.D. Program

       1.Deep-rooted Basic Abilities: Strengthen abilities in independent research and international language in literature and culture, academic thought, and language to broaden international horizons in Sinology.
       2.Enhance Abilities in Specialized Fields: Foster advanced abilities to study, interpret, discuss, and innovate in literature and culture, academic thought, and language:

          A.Literature and Culture: Cultivate advanced abilities to study, interpret, discuss, and innovate in Chinese literature and culture. Selection of this field requires the ability to conduct independent research.
          B.Academic Thought: Cultivate advanced abilities to study, interpret, discuss, and innovate in Chinese academic thought. Selection of this field requires the ability to conduct independent research.
          C.語言文字：培養對中國語言文字文獻研究、詮釋、論述、創新之專業高階能力。如在專業分流中選擇本項，須具備獨立研究之能力。
